چکیده
We report the results of our ionospheric HF heating experiments to generate artificial acoustic-gravitywaves (AGW) and traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID),whichwere conducted at theHigh-frequencyActiveAuroral Research Program facility inGakona, Alaska. Based on the data from UHF radar, GPS total electron content, and ionosonde measurements, we found that artificialAGW/TID can be generated in ionosphericmodification experiments by sinusoidally modulating the power envelope of the transmitted O-mode HF heater waves. In this case, the modulation frequency needs to be set below the characteristic Brunt–Vaisala frequency at the relevant altitudes. We avoided potential contamination from naturallyoccurring AGW/TID of auroral origin by conducting the experiments during geomagnetically quiet time period. We determine that these artificial AGW/TID propagate away from the edge of the heated region with a horizontal speed of approximately 160 m/s.

Traveling ionospheric disturbances triggered by the 2009 North Korean underground nuclear explosion
Underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) can induce acoustic-gravity waves, which disturb the ionosphere and initiate traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). In this paper, we employ a multi-step and multi-order numerical difference method with dual-frequency GPS data to detect ionospheric disturbances triggered by the North Korean UNE on 25 May 2009. Several International GNSS Service (IGS) st...
متن کاملAn interhemispheric model of artificial ionospheric ducts
[1] A duct in Earth’s ionosphere is characterized by density gradients perpendicular to the magnetic field, which enhance refractive indices and act as waveguides to whistler-range waves. Interhemispheric ducts along magnetic field lines have implications for the transmission of ELF radio waves across the globe. Strong HF ionospheric heating has been shown to create a depletion of electrons at ...
متن کاملModel for artificial ionospheric duct formation due to HF heating
[1] Strong electron heating by the injection of highly powerfu l HF waves can lead to the format ion of ionospheric plasma density perturbations that stretch along the magnetic field lines. Those density perturbations can serve as ducts for guiding natural and artificial ELF/VLF waves. This paper presents a theoretical model of duct formation due to HF heating of the ionosphere. The model is ba...

Ionosphere layer variations are divided into regular and irregular. Regular changes can be considered as daily changes, changes depending on latitude and changes due to solar activity. Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TID) is one of the irregular changes of ionosphere which categorized in small, medium and large scales. Medium-scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbance (MSTID) which are propa...

[1] Generation of ELF/VLF radio waves (300 Hz to 10 kHz) is achievable via modulation of natural currents in the lower ionosphere with high‐power HF (2–10 MHz) heating. Recently, Cohen et al. (2008b) put forth an alternative to conventional amplitude HF power modulation, therein referred to as geometric modulation, in which the HF ionospheric heating beam is geometrically steered at the desired...
